What Are You Listening to?

So I finally got around to listening to the new Tool song. Tool was my favorite band in high school and still ranks high for me. So I'll say right away that while Maynard James Keenan is a great singer and funny guy Puscifer is a mixed bag in terms of music and the new A Perfect Circle album felt a little weak to me. So I was really worried this song would be disappointing, especially when some critics said it was too much like their last album that came out 13 years ago. Fairly for Tool they were involved in a lot of legal trouble and 13 years wasn't the plan for this new album but still. So right off listening I do agree this song has some reminiscences of the 10,000 Days album but to call it a B-side for that album is ignorant. The song actually takes quite a dark, twisted, demented feel instrumentally that I feel fits in really well with their earlier material which makes me wonder if this album will be Tool attempting to merge their aggressive early sound with their later melodic sound. Maynard does use some of the same studio magic on his voice as he did on 10,000 Days but he also does a lot more with his voice in terms of singing. The drums are about the same from last album which is not a bad thing at all but that guitar is delicious and definitely plays a huge role in making this song what it is. I will say too though I feel the instruments overpower Maynard's voice at some points of the song. Overall though I really like this song and I'm eager to see what the full package Tool has in store for us. All hail one of the masters of prog metal.
