What's your motto?

Post by Juneberry » 2 months ago

I think most of us have those little lines we tell ourselves or others so much it could basically be a catchphrase. Some of us might even have more than one motto we try to live by! I thought it might be neat to hear each other's mottos/catchphrases, and maybe think of how they connect to our own lives.

I have a few I keep in mind- some I stole from my aunt, though. For me, my main ones are...

-Normal is overrated
-Goals high, expectations low
-Life is a team sport

The only other thing I like to share a lot is what my teacher told me when I was being teased for becoming eighteen, but I don't consider it a motto/catchphrase like those three. If anyone wants context or to share the context of their own, feel free to do so! I'd love to know how everyone could use each other's in their own lives~

"You're not dead yet unfortunately."

There's a bit of a story to it but I've always been humored by it and I tell it to myself enough.

Somehow I don't feel encouraged by those mottos at all... Though if they work for you, that's what's important!

Ah well mine is a strange story. Essentially I have been/still am at times suicidal in thoughts. For whatever reason that particular phrase came up to me a lot in my darkest moments. Somewhere along the way I guess I gave myself power over it by twisting the meaning to go from "Too bad you're not dead yet" to "Well you're not dead yet so might as well enjoy another day."

That story really calls out to me. I wish I had that skill when I get suicidal... >< Luckily it doesn't happen as much on my current meds.

I think I turned my suicidal thoughts into a bit of a dark comedy until it lost any power over me. At least that's how I explain it to myself. I still get the thoughts occasionally but I find they aren't as powerful as they once were.

I can't say if it's "proper" to do that or not. Really after studying mental health for four years in college I'm convinced sometimes every case ends up with a custom made solution of various things.

Won't hurt if I try, will it?
