In reality, I think Finnish is only difficult to learn to speak with perfect grammar. To learn enough to make yourself understood shouldn't be considerably worse than other languages.

I'll have to take your word for it since I don't know shit about the Finnish language besides it doesn't scare me as much as Icelandic. Even some Swedes told my mother they have no idea how Icelandic works.

I had 6 years of Swedish at school, but have forgotten much of it.
To what extent are Swedish and Finnish mutually intelligible?

Almost zero. Swedish is much more related to English and all others originated from Latin, while Finnish is an oddity closely related only to Estonian (and slightly to Hungarian).

Also the Finnish-Swedish - Finland has about 5% of Swedish speaking population, making it second official language - is to real Swedish... kind of like UK vs US English.

However, Swedish is the only language using the exact same alphabet as Finnish - the English alphabet plus Å, Ä and Ö.

Makes sense. :O English is actually a germanic language, though, as is Swedish. English is only based about forty percent on Latin.

English is a strange language since it was morphed by every group that conquered the British Isles at any point. Look at the oldest forms of English and it's nothing like modern English.
