How do you fight scam/robo calls?

Post by Juneberry » 3 months ago

We all get them, don't we? Scam artists trying to get our money through a phone call, calls that are just robots, calls where no one even answers when you pick up. It's a pity, but this is just a part of life for a number of us. I'm curious what you guys do to fight them.

I have an app on my phone that I use instead of the built in call app. The app uses a database of reports by users to tell you if a call is likely a scam or not- and, if it is, it just blocks them. It doesn't always block, mind you. But, if it's gotten enough complaints, it won't even let the phone ring for the call! I've gotten a lot less robo-calls and scams since installing it...

Now if it just blocked anyone calling for some person that's giving my phone number out as their own. :/

So what do you guys like to do when you get a scam call? Do you have an app like mine, or do you only know when you answer? And, finally, what advice would you give regarding dealing with them in general?

I just never answer the phone unless it is a number with a contact and I’m expecting a call. I rarely even have my phone on me, but when I do pick it up, I generally do have a few spam calls that I missed.

I’m getting a new phone soon, one I’ll likely be using more, so fighting scam calls may be something I’ll need to do in the future...

I used to try only answering calls in my contacts, but I have relatives that block their phone number so I can't always figure out if it's them. ^^;

I never answer unless I know the number. I hate talking on the phone though so yeah lol.
If I do happen to answer one I just hang up and that's it.

Verizon, my cell provider, actually provides an app that assists with screening robocalls. There is an option to pay but they also have a free tier.

I wish my government aid service would do that. I was lucky dad found the free app I use. It's called... Should I Answer, I believe.

Yeah there are some other apps available that try to help with those calls to. I don't think any of them are perfect at it though.

That's fair enough. They do help though, even if only to some degree.
If it fails, I either just yell at them or let dad do it.
That or we play a joke on them- dad kept getting calls from Death Valley, so he started answering the phone as if he were the grim reaper. xD

I honestly used to do that 99.9999% of the time because I hate phones. xD
