Anger Mounting Over PG&E As CA Fires Continue

(The Guardian) Anger mounting over PG&E
Frustration and anger is building across parts of northern California as utility giant Pacific Gas & Electric has undertaken its third round of sweeping blackouts in a week.

The company is oping to prevent its electrical equipment from toppling or coming into contact with branches and sparking fires, amid fierce winds and bone-dry, tinderbox conditions.

PG&E said Tuesday’s power shut-offs would affect about 1.5 million people in some 30 counties including the Sierra foothills, wine country and San Francisco Bay Area. They included 1 million still without power from a blackout over the weekend.

Across the darkened neighborhoods, people worried about charging cellphones and electric vehicles, finding gasoline and cash, staying warm and keeping their food from spoiling, the Associated Press reported a little earlier today.

Some ended up at centers set up by PG&E where people could go to power their electronics and get free water, snacks, flashlights and solar lanterns.

With no electricity for the fourth straight day, chef and caterer Jane Sykes realized she would have to throw out $1,000 worth of food, including trays of brownies, cupcakes and puff pastry. She also had little hope of getting a good night’s sleep there was no way to run the machine she relies on to counter her apnea. “I don’t think PG&E really thought this through,” she lamented.

PG&E officials said they understood the hardships caused by the blackouts but insisted they were necessary.

In Sonoma county, fire officials reported progress in their battle against the 120-square-mile Kincade fire, the largest currently burning in the state, saying it was 30% contained. More than 150,000 people were under evacuation orders.

Winds are slower than southern California, but still fierce and the fire danger remains high.

California's inability to handle wildfires is mostly due to the most idiotic policies on the planet. For example they're not allowed to do controlled burns because Hollywood celebs and tech giants complained about the smell. Park rangers can do little to nothing to clean up areas to keep potential risks down. Using animals like goats to eat the grasses and leaves and shit is apparently too high tech for them. I'm fully convinced at this point California's elite has to be allowing wildfires as part of an insurance scam. Nothing else makes sense to me at this point when plenty of other states don't have this constant issue.

Why would they want to smell those dirty controlled burns when they could instead enjoy the sweet smell of poor people's homes burning?

Also, it's nice to see PG&E doing something other than poisoning groundwater for a change.

Why I fully believe there's a scam going on with California's elite where they buy houses they never live in, have the wildfires burn them, then collect the insurance money after.

It wouldn't surprise me. California is probably the last place on Earth I'd want to live.

If it weren't for the numbers of people who've died in the past few years worth of wildfires, this would almost a comedy of errors across the board.

On the one hand, California's abysmal forest management policies have a lot to do with the situation; when you have that much undergrowth in forests and other wildlands, it not only smothers out the grasses, flowers, shrublands and other small plants that naturally grow in those areas, it also provides for nice abundant wildfire fuel if not managed.

On the other hand, PG&E's equally abysmal infrastructure management is also to blame; I mean, we're talking about an electric company that spends millions on shareholder bonuses for its' bosses while its' electrical infrastructure (power poles, transmission bases, substations, etc) are left neglected and failing.

Either way, California's screwed...

PG&E is the gold standard for corporate responsibility.

California as a state is beautiful. The people who run it and many of the people who live in it are cancer and are legitimately ruining America in some areas a hyper religious right buffoon could never do.

No, seriously. They're great. Just ask Erin Brockovich.
